What Does it Take?

What does it take to go LeMons racing? This is a frequent question. What it takes is a good bit of money, a lot of time and patience. Lots of patience. Working on beater cars is tough for a lot of reasons. You have rust, funky wiring, lack of parts, tight spaces, sharp edges and more rust. You pretty much bleed money for three or four months. Still, you have a ton of fun, get to solve a lot of problems and you get to drive a race car like Allan McNish. OK, maybe night quite like Allan McNish.

There are three general categories of LeMons cars. The cheater beater that is way faster than it should be and has had way more money than appropriate (or legal) spent on it, the cheap and reliable car (our Escort) or the novelty car that is raced just to see if it can make it. I freely admit that we go for reliable because we love being on the track. For me working on the car is fun, but is nothing compared to racing it.

That said, we still end up spending a ton of money on the thing. The Escort cost us $300 from Craig’s list when we bought it in 2008. We then put in $2000 to get it ready for the first race. Each race after that has seen us spend around $1400 on maintenance and tires. Tires are the kicker. Even cheap tires are going to run you $500 a set after getting them mounted and balanced.

The time commitment is also big. We are not professional mechanics. Everything takes about three times longer than you would think to do. It is just the nature of things. Fabricating roll cages, fitting seats, bleeding brakes and clutches all take time. You need to be ready to commit that time.

So, you might be asking, how is your car? Well, it is as ready to race as we can make it. We’ve fixed the blown head gasket, replaced the front struts, installed some cheap Ebay coilovers, replaced the rear brake calipers and all the rotors and pads (thanks Raceshopper.com!), and tested our spare engine. It should all be good to go. Tonight we load up the car and tomorrow we head for the track. We’re all excited and I expect we will have a great weekend.

It's Time to Go Again - Fall 2010

It’s time to pull the Escort out from its resting place, chase the snakes and the mud daubers out from under the fenders and go racing once again. We took a bit of a hiatus to allow for the birth of our daughter Sasha in January, but now we are ready to go have some fun.

From 2010 June Kids

The team is made up of Brian Gialloreto, Rachel Rennick and Michael Rennick begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting. We're the GRR in GRR Sports. We’ve also gotten a ton of help from Chip Lewis and Gil Jackson. Sadly, Chip will not be able to join us for the race as he working a little, Petit if you will, race at Road Atlanta the following weekend. I guess the paying gig takes precedence.

We’ve fixed the mechanical woes that halted our efforts last race. We were eliminated by an accessory drive belt that took out the timing belt and all the sensors on that side of the motor. While replacing the timing belt and sensors we also swapped out the water pump. We were in the area so why not? Aside, from that we are going with the same setup as before. As with all LeMons races the entrants are encouraged to dress the cars up in a theme. We’re going as NASA Surplus and the car will be decked out like the Space Shuttle. We figured this was appropriate as the shuttles are being retired this year. It really is the best time to buy your surplus million pound thrust solid rocket boosters. The Escort should go pretty well with a couple of those strapped on.

Ready or not...

This weekend we had the whole team together for a last push to get the car ready. We’ve finished work of tracing the power steering leak that caused us problems during the last hour of last spring’s race. We’ve bled the brakes and replaced the rotors and pads. Thanks again to RaceShopper.com and Hawk Performance Brake Pads for providing the brake hardware. Everything went together perfectly. We’ve finished paining the car and it looks surprisingly good. Maybe too good. I guess the judges will let us know what they think. All we need to do is get our outfits together for tech, get everything and everyone to the track and have some fun.

A number of friends and companies are helping us out with additional gear. IMSA is loaning us two way radios. Chip’s friend Brian is loaning us a truck and trailer. Vin Designs pottery is providing financial support for Brian's ride. Natalie’s folks Lee and Susan and been great hosts for us and the car.
